GREAT LAKES, Ill. - Capt. Jason Williamson will relieve Capt. Raymond Leung as Commanding Officer of Naval Station Great Lakes during a change of command ceremony on the morning of Friday, May 7. The ceremony will take place aboard the installation at Ross Theater on the mainside of the installation. Rear Adm. Charles Rock, Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, will serve as the guest speaker.

The ceremony will be a closed event, by invitation only, due to COVID-19 restrictions on base. It will be recorded, and photos and video will be publically released after the event concludes on the installation’s news page at https://www.dvidshub.net/unit/NSGLPA.

Leung served as Naval Station Great Lakes Commanding Officer from May 2018 to May 2021. His photo and biography can be found here: https://www.cnic.navy.mil/regions/cnrma/installations/ns_great_lakes/about/biographies/commanding_officer.html

Faced with the unprecedented challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, Leung inspired the command to innovatively execute critical services that ensured the uninterrupted annual training of 39,000 recruits to Sailors and the training of 11,000 enlisted surface warfare specialists in direct support of the Navy’s directive to maintain and protect the Navy’s accessions supply chain.

Earlier in his tenure, Leung led the base in continuing operations during the 2019 polar vortex, when wind chill temperatures dropped to 56 below zero.

Under his leadership, Great Lakes earned nominations from Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic for the 2021 Installation Excellence Award and the 2020 Chief of Naval Operation Shore Safety Award.

Leung received the Chicago Federal Executive Board 2020 John F. Kennedy Leadership Award.

Hailing from Phoenix, Leung is a 1990 graduate of Sunnyslope High School and a 1995 graduate of the University of Arizona where he earned a degree in Aerospace Engineering. He received his commission through Officer Candidate School (Class 02-96) in Pensacola, Florida and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in the E-2C Hawkeye in February 1998.

Leung has served with the “Wallbangers” of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron ONE ONE SEVEN (VAW-117); the “Sun Kings” of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron ONE ONE SIX (VAW-116); as the Operations Officers onboard USS GERALD R. FORD (CVN 78); and commanded the “Screwtops” of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron ONE TWO THREE (VAW-123).

Ashore, Leung has served at Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron ONE TWO ZERO in Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia as an E-2C Hawkeye 2000 instructor and AIRPAC/AIRLANT E-2C Hawkeye 2000 Evaluator; as the Air Adversary Officer at Carrier Group ONE in Naval Air Station North Island, California; as an Action Officer/Branch Chief in the Operations Plans Division (J35) at the United States Central Command in Tampa, Florida.

Leung has 2,300 hours and 400 arrested landings in the E-2C Hawkeye. He has an Associate of Arts in French from the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California; a Master in Defense Studies (MDS) from Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario, Canada; JPME 1 from Canadian Staff College in Toronto, Ontario, Canada; and JPME 2 from Joint Forces Staff College. Leung’s decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Strike/Flight Air Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards with a Combat ‘V’), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and various unit and campaign awards.

Williamson is a native of Yankton, South Dakota. He graduated from Boston University in May 1998 with a degree in BioMedical Engineering and was commissioned through the ROTC program. He was designated a Naval aviator in June 2000.

His assignments at sea have spanned both coasts, serving operational flying tours with the P-3C Orion and the P-8A Poseidon squadrons. He has logged over 2700 hours in multiple fixed wing aircraft in support of the Maritime Patrol missions.

Additionally, he served afloat on the crew of the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76). Highlights include time with the “Fighting Marlins” of Patrol Squadron Forty (VP-40) from 2000-2004, the “Fighting Tigers” of Patrol Squadron Eight (VP-8) as a Department Head from 2009-2011 and command of the “World Famous Pelicans” of Patrol Squadron Forty Five (VP-45) during the P-8’s maiden deployment to SIXTH Fleet in 2016.

Ashore, he has served as instructor pilot with the “Pro’s Nest” of Patrol Squadron Thirty (VP-30), as Deputy Executive Assistant to the Director, Air Warfare (OPNAV N98) and as the MQ-4C Triton Requirements Officer on the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. He most recently served as Deputy Commander of Task Force SEVEN TWO (CTF-72) in Misawa, Japan.

As the "Quarterdeck of the Navy,” Naval Station Great Lakes enables and sustains Fleet, Fighter and Family by providing superior, integrated Base Operating Support to over 50 tenant commands, including Recruit Training Command, the Navy's only boot camp. Naval Station Great Lakes is also home to 80 percent of the Navy's surface warfare specialty training.
