    Story by Capt. Hans Zeiger

    194th Wing

CAMP MURRAY, Wash.— When Tech. Sgt. Jalisha Storment of Lakewood describes her work as a Washington Air National Guard recruiter assigned to the 194th Wing, it is clear that she loves her job. “People walk into the office and are so excited about being a part of something bigger than themselves, and I get to be involved in that,” she said. “It is so humbling and although it gets busy and stressful, I enjoy every moment of it.”

During a statewide annual awards ceremony in March, Storment was awarded the Production Recruiter of the Year Award for the entire Washington Air National Guard.

Storment grew up on the island of Oahu. She served in the Air Force on active duty for a time.

Storment learned about the Air National Guard when she faced a difficult turning point in her active duty service. “The Guard was presented to me after finding out I was being forced managed out of active duty,” she said. “It was one of the hardest times of my life.” She agreed to join the Guard, and today, she shares her story with new recruits to the 194th Wing. “When I speak to my applicants, I always testify how the Guard saved my military career and how I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my leadership taking a chance on me,” she said.

Today, Storment is helping to bring a new generation of airmen into the 194th Wing. She describes the Wing as an organization that takes care of its airmen. “I love how the Wing takes care of its people,” said Storment. She says that the 194th Wing is “very family oriented.”

In addition, Storment says that the Guard is an exceptional outlet for professional development, with “so many opportunities just within the Washington Guard: temp orders, schooling, permanent orders, ADOS, traditional, cross-training, etc. You create your own path within the Guard and that is awesome.”

As Storment looks back on her own military service thus far, she expresses her pride in her own growth as an airman. “The thing I am most proud of is how far I’ve come,” she said. “Awards and recognition is great but to realize how much you have grown as a person is something no one else can give you.”

Outside of the Guard, Storment worked as a bartender on weekends prior to the pandemic. She enjoys snowboarding, traveling, and going to concerts in her free time.
