San Diego- Naval Medical Research and Training Center San Diego (NMRTC) conducted an annual mass casualty drill via video conference, April 16.

“The purpose of the drill was to focus on NMCSD policy and guidance for mass casualty response with an emphasis on the preparation and response,” said Christopher Springer, head of NMCSD emergency management.

This video conference drill reviewed, validated, identified gaps, and gathered information for NMCSD mass casualty and code grey emergency operation plans to prepare for the functional exercise that will be held in July.

For many throughout the country, things look a lot different and so did the mass casualty drill. In normal routine, mass casualty drills are real-life simulation.

“In light of COVID-19, the drill is being held on a virtual platform,” said Springer. “Using the virtual platform allows those who are teleworking to participate, as well as promote social distancing.”

Sailors and civilians from many different departments across NMCSD participated in the drill, including members of the emergency management working group, environment of care committee members, security department, patient administration, department for nursing services, and emergency department members.

NMCSD’s number one priority is providing the safest, highest quality patient-centered medical care for our veterans, service members and their families. NMCSD is committed to operational readiness, outstanding customer service and always delivering world-class health care.

NMRTC’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMRTC serves as the single point of contact in support of installation and operational commanders, providing medical information, support and over medical cognizance of the active duty and reserve force.
