CAMP BULLIS, Texas – The 80th Training Command (The Army School System) named the winner of its 2021 Best Warrior Competition here April 23, 2021.
Staff Sgt. Trevor MacDonald won the top honor for the command after scoring the most points during multiple events spread out over three days.
Competitors completed and received scores for their performance during rifle and pistol ranges, an obstacle course, a 12-mile ruck march, an Army Combat Fitness Test, warfighting tasks, written tests, and day and night land navigation courses.
MacDonald, a wheeled vehicle mechanic instructor with the 3rd Brigade (Ordnance), 94th Training Division (Force Sustainment), 80th TC (TASS) at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, said his training leading up to the competition played a real factor in winning.
“The experience was nothing like I had done before. It was a lot of early mornings in the gym, and I had a tremendous amount of support from my unit and family,” said MacDonald. “The training gave me the confidence I needed going into the 80th Training Command Best Warrior Competition to win.”
He will now prepare for and compete in the U.S. Army Reserve competition against other winners from numerous geographic and functional commands in May 2021.
“I will be working a lot of early mornings and late nights with my leadership to get better prepared for the Army Reserve competition,” said MacDonald.
Regardless of the outcome of the Army Reserve competition, MacDonald looks forward to seeing what the next level has in store for him. “If you win, you win. If you lose, you learn.”
The other three competitors in the 80th TC (TASS) competition were: Staff Sgt. Zachary Hampton (runner up), a master fitness trainer course instructor at the Noncommissioned Officer Academy-Fort Dix, New Jersey; Staff Sgt. Brittany Shaffer, a training NCO with the 1st Brigade (Engineer), 102d Training Division (Maneuver Support), 80th TC (TASS) at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; and Staff Sgt. Lee Sweeney, a combat engineer instructor with the 1st BDE (EN), 102d TD (MS), 80th TC (TASS) at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
