FALLS CHURCH, Va. (NNS) -- The U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) announced Navy Medicine's fiscal year 2020 Sailor of the Year (SOY) at Defense Health Headquarters, April. 23.

Rear Adm. Bruce L. Gillingham, Surgeon General of the Navy and Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, and Force Master Chief Michael J. Roberts, Director of the Hospital Corps kicked off the ceremony as the nominees awaited the announcement of this year's selectee.

“Out of 121 Navy Medicine commands representing over 12,000 enlisted there were 4000 possibilities that could be here today,” said Roberts. “Your dedication to the navy, your command and your Sailors makes it evident why you four are standing here today.”

Roberts thanked the Sailors and all the leaders across the Navy Medicine enterprise who helped make the ceremony happen.

“Thank you for the example that you set and what you bring to Navy Medicine,” said Gillingham. “It is with tremendous pride that I share this stage with you today.”

Hospital Corpsman Petty Officer 1st Class Michael Shoener, from Navy Medicine Training Support Center / Naval Medical Forces Support Command(NMTSC/NMFSC), was announced as Navy Medicine's 2020 SOY.

Shoener, a North Kingstown, Road Island native, felt an overwhelming sense of pride and was humbled when the announcement was made.

“This is no way an accomplishment of my own,” said Shoener. “I am a culmination of everyone I’ve interacted with junior and senior and I am just proud to be able to represent them.”

As part of the SOY program, Shoener will be meritoriously promoted to the rank of Chief Petty Officer later this year.

The remaining active duty nominees included Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Alexis J. Sandoval, assigned to Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Falls Church, Virginia; Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Dylan Marrone, assigned to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland and Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Thurman McCray III, assigned to Naval Hospital Guam.

Each of the nominees received a Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal signed by Rear Admiral Gillingham for their nominations.
