AMC CG cites praise for ASC from combat commanders, Army’s top leaders

ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. – The briefing given to the U.S. Army Materiel Command’s top leader here on April 22 began with recognition given to six members of the Army Sustainment Command team, and with words of praise for ASC that came from leaders at every level of the Army.
Gen. Ed Daly, commanding general of AMC, told those attending the briefing at ASC Headquarters, and brigade commanders and other senior staff from around the command who attended via video link, that he constantly heard positive comments from leaders of combat units in the field about the support provided by ASC.
“ASC is doing spectacular work out in the battlespace,” Daly said. “It’s refreshing to hear what the combatant commanders have to say about what you do for them.”
Daly said he had briefed the Army’s chief of staff and other senior leaders the day before, and also heard plenty of positive feedback from them.
“When I talked about what you were doing for the Army, what I heard back was unbelievably positive,” Daly said. “You’re doing an absolutely fantastic job, and that’s why I always look forward to coming here.”
Just before making those remarks, Daly honored these members of the ASC team, all of whom will receive commander’s coins and certificates:
• John Dengler of the Acquisition Integration and Management Center, who served as primary staff officer as the AIM staff shifted to telework due to the COVID-19 pandemic and enabled the organization to continue to effectively communicate and meet all mission requirements.
• Staff Sgt. Sean Crotty, who improved the processes and practices used for training Soldiers in ASC.
• Christine Suiter, a logistics management specialist in G-4 who managed the successful transition to an electronic Financial Liability Investigation of Property Loss system and administered training on eFLIPL.
• Jesse Henneman, a logistics management specialist in the Transportation Readiness Directorate who represented the Army during the implementation of a new household goods contract and used data analytics to streamline the process and improve quality.
• Chief Warrant Officer 4 Eucalia Rosa of the Supply Chain Operations Directorate, who provided exceptional service while assigned as senior supply systems technician.
• George Eaton, chief of ASC’s Office of Communication and Engagement, who coordinated ASC’s participation in two virtual symposiums held by the Association of the U.S. Army and who led his office in maintaining effective communication and historical services throughout the pandemic.
The topics briefed to Daly included Project Inclusion, a holistic Army-wide effort to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion at all locations and among all ranks, grades and levels. He was told how ASC is using the Journey to Leadership program to enhance training and promotion opportunities, and how projects developed by JTL participants are allowing the command to “see ourselves” in order to identify barriers to advancement and eliminate all forms of harassment and discrimination.
“This is a great initiative,” Daly said, “because it ties in directly to taking care of our people, and to building cohesive, effective teams. There’s nothing more important than that, because our foundation truly is our workforce.
“We are in a competition for talent,” Daly said, “so we need to cast our net widely when recruiting for talent, and we need to train, develop and retain the talented people that we do attract. We need to encourage diversity, because every study shows that diverse organizations perform exponentially better.”
Daly was then updated on mission areas such as the Corps and Division Logistics Support Element operating concept; the Logistics Civil Augmentation Program, including LOGCAP activities in the field, support to COVID-19 vaccine trials, and the ongoing transition to LOGCAP V; ASC’s financial posture, and the command’s response to present and potential budget shortfalls; and the model for the future Supply Support Activity.
At the conclusion of the briefing, Daly said the contacts ASC had made with Army echelons at all levels were key to the command’s success.
“You influence the organizations that you support, and your actions are in line with my directions and with the priorities of the Army’s senior leaders,” he said. “You need to continue to engage and maintain contact at the echelon level, because that will assure that we’re building readiness and advancing modernization.
“This is a fantastic organization,” Daly concluded. “I truly appreciate what you do for our Army every day.”
