CAMP HUMPHREYS, Republic of Korea - The Humphreys Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) is organizing and hosting a BOSS Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Week (SAAPW) at numerous locations here, April 26 – 29, to better educate, inform and inspire the community.
“Our goal with BOSS SAAPW is to facilitate a junior enlisted motivated event, providing as much information on SHARP to the USAG Humphreys community, as possible,” said Spc. Ian Holmes, the BOSS President and a CH-47 helicopter repairer, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, United States Army Garrison Humphreys. “Our BOSS representatives have been requesting an event like this since the release of the Fort Hood Report. The BOSS council wants to ensure the voice of the single Soldier is heard, by facilitating an event of this proportion.”
On April 26, 27 and 28, at the Downtown Plaza, multiple informative events will be occurring each day. From 10 a.m. to Noon each day, the 65th Medical Brigade will host a SHARP 101 event. From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., 8th Army will host a statistic discussion, and from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., there will be a panel discussion. Each event on these days will also incorporate a question and answer segment, allowing the community to participate and ensure that their questions and concerns are answered.
Additionally, on April 26, beginning at 9 a.m., a Men's Mentorship Program will be held at Maude Hall, in the second-floor briefing rooms. Also, on April 27, a Women's Mentorship Program will be held at 9 a.m., in the Maude Hall second-floor briefing rooms. These programs are designed to be open discussions and are limited to males only for the Men's Mentorship Program and females only for the Women's Mentorship Program.
On April 29, the week will culminate at Balboni Field, located at 7th Street and Marne Avenue, with a public reading of the Fort Hood Independent Review by Command Sgt. Maj. Robert H. Cobb, the senior enlisted advisor for Eighth Army, and a question and answer panel following the reading, from 4 p.m. through 6:30 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., a Take Back the Night 5K Glow Run event, displaying that Humphreys is a safe place to run at night, and the SHARP Stomp, a community demonstration march raising awareness to stop sexual harassment and assault, will commence at Balboni Field.
"Marne Avenue, 7th Street, 9th Street, 11th Street, 12th Street, 13th Street, 14th Street, 15th Street, Bayonet Avenue, and Indian Head Avenue will all be partially obstructed on April 29 for the "Take Back the Night Run" and "SHARP Stomp;" cars will be directed by road guards to detours," said Holmes. "All of the events are open to the public. Talk to your Chain of Command to see how you can do your part and get involved by attending."
Community members are encouraged to attend events throughout next week.
Beginning April 25, the BOSS team will be decorating the Downtown Plaza area and are still open to volunteers who wish to help. More information can be found by reading flyers which are distributed throughout barracks and facilities, the standalone A-Frame advertisements located throughout the post, seeking out unit BOSS representatives, or by interacting with the BOSS team through their Facebook page, at facebook.com/HumphreysBoss.
