U.S. Marines from the Cherry Point Motorcycle Mentorship program (MMP) conducted joint training with the New Bern Police Department in a program called Bike Safe North Carolina in New Bern, North Carolina, April 16, 2021. Bike Safe NC is a one day long class offered by the New Bern Police Department, aimed at assessing the driving capabilities of motorcyclist and teaching them ways to avoid accidents.
“We’re trying to teach them the safety of what we’ve learned as motor officers,” said Aaron Williams, a police officer with the New Bern Police Department Traffic Unit and Bike Safe assessor.
The training is usually open to anyone, but the MMP requested a private session. The class will allow Marines to get a better idea of how the New Bern police train, the laws they enforce, and the causes and preventions of accidents.
“I hope to be able to take what I learn back to our unit and spread that information so they can get something from it or sign up for this class themselves” said David Wilkerson, aviation safety manager and MMP representative.
One of the benefits of the class is that it is not on the traditional coned, closed course but on the streets Marines frequent. The class also helps bridge the gap between the community and the Marines on base.
“I think it’s nice to be able to come and ride on real roads and establish a relationship with the New Bern police department,” said U.S Marine Corps Cpl. Shane Ryan, marksmanship trainer at the range and member of the MMP.
Williams said he loves the opportunity to work with the community in a way that’s different than his day to day routine.
“Usually when I talk to people it’s in a bad situation, but this class is a positive because I get ride with the community and teach, and I love that,” said Williams.
Wilkerson said he hopes that more Marines will sign up for future classes. He feels the program will be beneficial in mitigating motorcycle accidents.
“We’re losing Marines that we don’t need to lose, not in combat, but on the streets we ride on,” said Wilkerson. “That could be minimized by continuing our trainings.”
The class is available to anyone who has a motorcycle endorsement. It is one to two times a month and it is completely free.
