FORT LEE, Va. (April 7, 2021) – Army community members here are hoping they have kicked their way into the Guinness Book of World Records.
Individuals connected with the Child and Youth Services program took part in a virtual soccer kick challenge Tuesday evening. Participants included CYS youngsters and their families, FMWR staff, and Family Child Care providers. The contributed video snippets were forwarded to Installation Management Command where they will be combined with submissions from other bases to create what is hopefully a record-setting string of soccer passes.
CYS Youth Sports Director Tyneika Thomas organized the event and said it served a twofold purpose.
“We’re hoping, of course, that we actually succeed in breaking the record, but we also recognized it as one more way to bring attention to April’s Month of the Military Child observance.”
Celebrated annually, MOMC is a time to honor the sacrifices of military families around the world. The emphasis is on youngsters who demonstrate resilience and bravery while dealing with the demands of Army life – hardships such as missing parents during long deployments, multiple moves and loss of friends, and frequently starting over in new schools.
Thomas noted how past MOMC celebrations at Fort Lee included a parade, a festival and multiple hands-on activities with copious community participation. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, however, recognition events were scaled back to virtual and in-house only as of last April.
“The message is still the same, though,” Thomas insisted. “We truly recognize what military children go through, and want them to know we honor and appreciate them for being resilient, resolute and relentless in this changing world.”
Word on whether or not IMCOM broke the record will not be known for some time. The video submission deadline is April 21. Additionally, the requirement to string together what could be thousands of videos will be a daunting task.
Thomas offered a final note of thanks to the Fort Lee CYS community for submitting more than 100 videos to the project. In regard to MOMC, she said additional photos and video of ongoing activities will be posted to her organization’s social media sites, including www.facebook.com/FortLeeCYSS.
