JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Navy Medicine Operational Training Command’s information technology team received the Navy Medicine “CAPT Joan Dooling Information Professional Team of the Year” award for 2020.
The NMOTC IT team, headquartered at Pensacola Naval Air Station, Fla., is comprised of 30 contract and civilian staff providing technical support to 16 training centers within six detachments, and dispersed across 19 geographic locations. NMOTC is aligned under Naval Medical Forces Support Command which is headquartered here.
The team was cited for their dedication to readiness and support of Navy Medicine education and training to generate the Ready Medical Force in an uncompromised manner without question, according to the award package submitted on their behalf.
“It’s great to formally recognize a team that that has reached great achievement through outstanding synergy,” said Eric Jackson, Navy Medicine chief information officer (CIO). “COVID-19 has accelerated the pace of IT advancement and the team at NMOTC has risen to the challenge.”
“The accomplishments of the Navy Medicine Operational Training Command information technology team overcoming the challenges of COVID has been extraordinary,” said Rear Adm. Cynthia Kuehner, NMFSC commander. “They put forth an outstanding effort to beat every obstacle thrown their way, and I am glad to see their effort was recognized by receiving the 2020 Capt. Joan Dooling award.”
The NMOTC chief of information technology was humbled her team was selected as the recipient of the award.
“To be considered for nomination in and of itself was a great honor but to be the recipient of the final Joan Dooling Information Professional Team award is truly humbling as I am confident there were many other teams throughout this record year of challenges who were just as capable of receiving this award,” said Victoria Burke, NMOTC CIO. “Many leaders understand that workplace appreciation is an investment in our people and one of the most genuine ways to demonstrate gratitude is for specific actions. And while they hear my constant thankfulness for their dedication to the mission, it is an entirely different level to receive direct appreciation from senior leaders all the way up through the Surgeon General.
“Our IT team routinely provides technical support across many diverse locations, but the challenges of a timeline that stretched from the aftermath of an active-shooter to defending network posture against two direct hurricane storms, amidst a global pandemic, prompted creative solutions to provide platforms where our detachments could maintain the training pipeline is overwhelming to consider,” Burke added. “Our team of professionals include network and system administration, cybersecurity, application development, telecommunication and IT procurement specialists that each bring unique skills to a command and mission that we are each proud to support. When you love what you do, an overwhelming year is just a day in the life.”
