    101st Conducts Extremism Stand Down

FORT CAMPBELL, KY – In support of Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III’s Department of Defense-wide order to discuss the issues of extremist ideology in the ranks, the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) conducted a post wide extremism stand-down day, March 25.

All service members and Department of the Army employees in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) participated in a stand-down to discuss the issue of extremist ideology, reflect on the importance of the oath each service member takes, and review impermissible behaviors and how those actions are prohibited under applicable law and DoD policy.

“Conducting this training will only make us better as a force,” said Capt. Jessie Hamilton, Commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 326th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). “We trained our members for what to look for and how to report it, if they ever find themselves in a compromising situation.”

Austin directed the stand down to address extremism in the ranks of all U.S. military services. To set the tone for the training, the division opened by playing Austin’s extremism video, where he stressed the stand down’s importance. His directive contained three specific requirements.

The first requirement addressed the importance of the oath of office, the second addressed impermissible behaviors, and the third addressed procedures for reporting suspected or actual extremist behaviors. This directive is the first initiative in a deliberate campaign to identify and eliminate harmful behavior in the ranks and the workforce.

Throughout the training, commands across the 101st continually stressed that violent extremism is not in keeping with Army values and the oath we take to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.

Army Regulation 600-20 provides definitions and leader actions, and indicators of potential extremism can be found in AR 381-12.
