NWDC Guest Speaker Series: Research Coordinator Discusses CNA Arctic Portfolio

    NORFOLK, VA, UNITED STATES

Dr. Mallory P. Ladd, analyst and research coordinator for CNA Arctic Operations and Training, discussed the organization’s Arctic research portfolio in a virtual Guest Speaker Series presentation at Navy Warfare Development Command (NWDC) March 25, 2021, on the MS Teams platform.
“We discussed how CNA approaches the research questions and problem sets our sponsors bring to us, and I provided some background information and context on the current status of operations and U.S. strategy in the Arctic,” Dr. Ladd said. “Something we consistently see in our analyses of both operations and security issues is that the Arctic is often talked about as a single region, but the challenges that exist, the decisions that need to be made, and the underlying data that helps inform those decisions are at the sub-regional level. This is often why there appear to be so many paradoxes and why a tailored, interdisciplinary approach to these research questions is so important.”
Dr. Ladd said that the United States is an Arctic nation with current, ongoing commitments and responsibilities in the region. There is a chance that increasing activity may precipitate some level of military involvement and, as such, new requirements are emerging across the DOTMLPF-P spectrum (doctrine, organization, training, materiel, leadership, personnel, facilities, and policy).
NWDC has a working relationship with CNA, headquartered in Arlington, Va. CNA is a federally funded research and development center with more than 500 professionals at the headquarters location and more than 50 researchers embedded with Naval commands and other organizations across the world. CNA embedded analysts observe all aspects of a process – people, decisions, actions, consequences—and then collaborate with headquarters-based researchers to assess data and arrive at findings as required. CNA is comprised of two companies: the Center for Naval Analyses and the Institute for Public Research. The former works closely with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. The latter provides public-sector organizations with the tools they need to tackle the complex challenges of making government more efficient and keeping our country safe and strong.
