SAN DIEGO – Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) recognized Sleep Awareness Week Mar. 14-20.
Sleep Awareness Week is a campaign from the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) that educates the public about the importance of sleep health.
According to the NSF, some circadian rhythm-related sleep disorders can be caused by jet lag or shift work, two issues which some service members may face. Poor sleep habits, like drinking caffeine or alcohol too close to bedtime, a lack of bedtime routine, or looking at a phone or computer too late at night tent to cause the body’s circadian rhythm to get out of sync.
“One key benefit of getting good enough good sleep is strengthening your immune system to help you prevent or limit infection in your body,” said the NSF.
The NSF recommends adults get 7-9 hours of sleep per night, and to go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day, including weekends. A relaxing bedtime routine, such as listening to calming music or reading a book can positively affect sleep quality.
Even though the military lifestyle can be stressful, making efforts to get good sleep can only benefit service members. For sleep-related questions, contact your primary care physician.
NMCSD’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
