SAN DIEGO – Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) recognizes Patient Safety Awareness Week March 14-20.
Patient Safety Awareness Week is an annual recognition event that provides an avenue for healthcare associations to distribute information in regard to the work being done to promote patient safety.
This year, NMCSD improved its patient safety by adopting a new electronic health record system, Military Health System (MHS) Genesis.
MHS Genesis improves patient safety by allowing healthcare providers to store and recall patient medical records under a singular system.
"Prior to MHS Genesis, providers and staff accessed a multitude of systems to provide the various specialty services and levels of care that we deliver at NMCSD," said Lt. Cmdr. Joshua Wymer, NMCSD's chief nursing informatics officer.
Wymer said MHS Genesis integrates all of those functions while serving as a patient's single record for all inpatient, outpatient, health and dental care throughout their full lifetime of enrollment.
An example of a patient safety improvement that MHS Genesis provides are the notifications to healthcare providers of medical history that may affect a patient's current treatment.
"There is a single source of truth for patient history and relevant health factors," said Wymer. "Critical patient safety considerations such as allergies are now managed by the same system that manages the pharmacy’s inventory. Recognizing that a patient has a particular allergy, and matching that to the care and treatments prescribed, allows the system to alert providers and staff of potential mismatches while ensuring that only patient-appropriate medications are administered or dispensed."
MHS Genesis allows the entire health history of patients to be available, which helps providers make more informed treatment decisions. Providers can validate that the care that is administered is appropriate for that specific patient.
"MHS Genesis is a game-changer, and truly reflects the future," said Wymer. "As the system continues to roll out across the Military Health System, we will have a single record that serves as the source of truth for the specific beneficiary under care at any time, in any place by any healthcare professional around the globe."
For all the care NMCSD provides, whether it is inpatient services, advanced specialty care or routine outpatient services, the fully-integrated nature of MHS Genesis facilitates the fullest potential of patient safety and care.
NMCSD’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high-quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
