Dalton Askew, a firefighter at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point Fire and Emergency Services (CPF&ES), was recognized as the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Provider of the Year.
The EMS Provider of the Year award is bestowed upon an individual identified by the fire department leadership as having gone above and beyond in service to the community. There are a lot of different aspects that go into the selection process. Incorporated in the prerequisites are, the accomplishments, job performance, technical competence, leadership ability, initiative, and resourcefulness of the individual who was nominated.
“Askew always has a good attitude,” said Assistant Chief Paul Ringheiser. “He is extremely technically competent, he’s an instructor, and he’s good at what he does. He knows his stuff.”
Askew is an accomplished firefighter with a great deal of experience under his belt. He’s the top Rapid Sequence Induction/Intubation Medic for CPF&ES and Indian Beach Fire Department, and is a life-saving asset for both communities.
Askew was selected to attend Fire Officer III, a course designed to help further the leadership skills and abilities of a firefighter, and is on track to completing the requirements for the rank of captain.
“He saved multiple lives this past year,” said Ringheiser. “He provided critical care to a woman with imminent respiratory failure, saving her life, and he delivered drug and electric cardioversion for a man with Supraventricular Tachycardia, which basically means he had an abnormal heart rate and Askew set it back to normal, stabilizing a patient in crisis.”
Askew has been noted to have a fantastic personality and to be extremely humble. Askew knew he was put up for the award but, he neither thought nor expected to receive it.
“I mean I knew I was being submitted for it,” said Askew. “We have so many great paramedics and firefighters here I figured someone else would receive it. I didn’t do anything special to get this award, I just did my job.”
Askew says he cares a great deal about the community. He provides training and mentorship for junior firefighters, he instructs Basic Emergency Medical Technician classes for local responders off base, educating hundreds in his profession, promotes awareness and community recovery from COVID-19, and was the first medic at CPF&ES to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
“He just cares so much,” said Ringheiser. “Just him being on the team already helps us so much, his personality is contagious, and he inspires everyone to do better. Even though 2020 was a dry year and not whole lot was going on due to COVID-19, he really stood out as the clear winner and rose up, that’s why I picked him.”
Askew’s dedication to what he does, his care for the community, his proficiency within the fire department, and his ability to take initiative and be a leader in a time of need, set him apart from his peers. Although he wasn’t expecting to win, his accomplishments and actions speak for themselves and it’s clear to see why he was chosen to receive the EMS Provider of the Year award.
“I just come to work and put forth my best,” said Askew. “I work with so many great providers, any one of us could’ve received this award. They don’t need me to try and motivate them to do better cause they all have the drive within them. We are firefighters and paramedics, our job is to serve the community and keep them safe. Those are our customers.”
