PHILADELPHIA – In partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the City of Philadelphia, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Marines and Sailors with Combat Logistics Battalion (CLB) 22 launched the state-run, federally-supported Center City Vaccination Center at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, March 3, 2021.
After several days of training alongside FEMA staff during a soft launch, where thousands of state employees and essential workers were inoculated, U.S. Marines and U.S. Sailors now have an enduring mission of vaccinating 6,000 Philadelphians per day, seven days a week, with a 12-hour daily operational window from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.
“The Navy and Marine Corps team is ready and excited to support the daily delivery of 6,000 COVID-19 vaccines to the people of Philadelphia,” said Lt. Cmdr. Caitlin Workman, the medical officer-in-charge with CLB-22. “We are honored to be a part of the FEMA-led effort in the establishment of this mass vaccination site.”
The Type 1 site is the first federally-supported vaccination center in Pennsylvania. The public opening is also historic for the U.S. Marine Corps as CLB-22 becomes the first Marine-led unit capable of vaccinating 6,000 people per day in support of the whole-of-government response to fight the pandemic.
“The U.S. Marine Corps and Navy are here to support FEMA,” said Lt. Sadid Asad, a medical officer with CLB-22. “Our mission is defeating COVID-19.”
