MOUNTAIN HOME AIR FORCE BASE, Idaho -- On Feb. 12, 2021, five Airmen from the 366th Communication Squadron (CS) were sworn in and transferred from the U.S. Air Force (USAF) to the U.S. Space Force (USSF). This type of transfer is a historical ceremony that hasn’t occurred since the USAF became established from the Army Air Forces in 1947.
“I was very excited to hear that I was selected to be a part of the USSF,” said Airman 1st Class Douglas Eugene McCoppin, 366th CS radio frequency transmission systems technician. “It will be amazing to be there from the beginning and see how a new service is set up and how it takes shape.”
According to Capt. Sean Nuttall, 366th CS operations flight commander, to qualify for the selection of transfer, the applying Airmen must fall under a common Air Force Specialty Code that is in both branches. For enlisted and officers, the common AFSC are: cyberspace operations, engineering, intelligence and acquisition.
The primary quality the decision board was looking for was space experience. However, if the Airman or officer doesn’t have that, it does not disqualify them from applying.
“After this, the board looked at various records certifications possessed, expertise levels and other factors to make the final decisions,” Nuttall said. “Being denied acceptance to the USSF did not mean the person had an inadequate job performance, it simply meant the USSF needed someone with a different set of skills and experience.”
During the transfer ceremony, the new Guardians wore their new USSF OCP uniforms, but even though they are recognized as part of the USSF, it might still be a while before they will be able to PCS to their first space assignment.
“One thing that was emphasized by USSF leadership was that a transfer to the USSF does not trigger a PCS, meaning Guardians can still fulfill their PCS contract and stay in MHAFB until its completion,” Nuttall said.
Robert A. Towberman, Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force, said that normal Air Force assignment cycles will still happen on schedule, but they are trying to get their people into USSF assignments as, “fast as practical”.
