HOHENFELS, Germany — The Hohenfels military community continues to make health and safety a top priority. On February 5, 2021, the COVID-19 vaccination has become available at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center, where soldiers and civilians have volunteered to receive the shot. It is the first of a two-dose vaccination shot where they will receive the second shot 28 days later. With these shots, the community has a better chance in preventing the virus from spreading to others including friends and family members.

“I got the vaccination shot today because I did not want my leadership style to change. I am an engaged leader,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Deondre Long, Battalion Command Sergeant Major of 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment. “The shot will enable me to develop a better relationship with my soldiers. It will help better interact with them without a standoffish leadership.”

The ones who received the vaccination said they care about protecting themselves and others against the COVID-19 virus. They felt confident enough to take these doses and they want their lives to go back to normal. It has already been almost a year since the virus outbreak started. With the vaccine becoming available, people have a better chance to living their normal lives again.

“I got the shot because I am looking forward to having a peaceful world back. I feel this is the first step to having a sense of normalcy again. I want to be a part of that solution, said Perla Walker, a Hohenfels Elementary School teacher.

Red Cross volunteers as well as the medical staff at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center and the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment were the ones conducting the vaccinations. People appeared more than happy to receive the vaccination shot.

“This experience was easy and seamless. If you’re up for it, get the vaccine because it will help make a difference. I care about protecting my family and my health for future rotations,” said Capt. Sean Boniface, JMRC Falcon Team Observer Coach Trainer.

Thousands of lives have been lost due to the COVID-19 virus. It doesn’t matter how old a person is, everyone is at risk of obtaining the disease and spreading it to others. The importance of getting the vaccine shot is crucial as it can save lives.

“I received the vaccination to get immunity so when I’m able to do my job, I offer a safe environment for parents and children,” said Dana Wooten, a registered nurse at the New Parent Support Program of Army Community Service. “As a registered nurse, I’m promoting vaccinations of all types and this COVID vaccine shot will help reduce the number of lives lost to this disease.”

Many health experts recommend taking the vaccine, as they’ve conducted the proper research and analysis of the virus itself and the vaccine.

“The COVID-19 vaccination results in 94% protection against the virus. Without your protection against the virus, your body response is limited and as we know this virus is super stealthy and can be transmitted readily by persons with no symptoms,” said Maj. Meredith Hettinger, Hohenfels Health Clinic Chief Nurse. “Although the vaccine does not take the place of proper handwashing and respiratory hygiene efforts, it does decrease your odds of contracting the virus significantly.”
