HOHENFELS, Germany — To prepare for the upcoming training exercise Combined Resolve XV, the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment conducted Operation Skolkan Spirit. This training exercise was created by 1-4 leadership to maintain and increase lethality.

“Today, we are conducting reconnaissance training to make sure the companies are operating in all cylinders,” said Cpl. Jacob Downs, a squad leader for Cherokee company, 1-4 Infantry Regiment. “We are making sure people are doing their jobs well and being efficient overall.”

One aspect of this training event involved 1-4 conducting multiple integrated laser engagement systems training. This included troops enhancing their skillset in the use of the MILES Anti-Tank 4 and MILES rocket-propelled grenade weapons. The troops would practice firing these weapons and ensuring they are continuously operating.

“We are making sure all the weapons and MILES systems are operating properly for the upcoming training exercises,” said Downs. “The last thing we want to see happen is troops having the weapons and MILES gear not functioning out in the field because we won’t have the capability to complete our mission without functioning equipment.”

It was important to have this operation held so that it ensures the troops’ readiness prior a training exercise. By utilizing this equipment, troops are aware of what procedural methods work and don’t work for when they prepare for the upcoming training exercises.

“The benefit of this training is that once the troops identify the target and utilize the right procedures, they can initiate the right volume of fires to take out their enemies,” said Sgt. 1st Class Allen George, Warhog team Observer Coach/Trainer.

George explained that 1-4 IN is normally the opposing force (OPFOR) during major rotational exercise and paints the picture that they are just the enemy in this game. But, some of the OPFOR troops conducting this operation received the opportunity to train along with rotational units, further improving their skillset and cohesion.

“The more we improve, the more the rotational units improve. If we’re operating in all cylinders, the rotational units will have better assessment outcomes for these training exercises,” added Downs.

Though Operation Skolkan Spirit has since ended, the Soldiers at 1-4 IN are all the better for that unique training experience, granting them the opportunity to stay sharp and lethal as Combined Resolve is just over the horizon.
