BEMOWO PISKIE TRAINING AREA, Poland- Newly arrived Troops from the U.S. Army 1st Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment partnered with the Romanian Army Transylvanian Gepard Air Defense Detachment, 8th rotation, to execute a successful joint combat fire of the Gepard Air Defense System February 2, 2021, on a snow-covered range overseen by the Polish Army near Bemowo Piskie Training Area, Poland.

U.S. mortars illuminated targets for the Romanian tankers to set their sights on. Then the cavalrymen got to see the precision and accuracy of the Gepard all-weather-capable, self-propelled anti-aircraft gun at work.

“The Gepards bring an amazing capability to the Battle Group,” said U.S. Army 1st Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment Lt. Col. Jason Adler, the new NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group-Poland Commander. “This is a great opportunity for the U.S. Soldiers to understand that capability and integrate in.”

Representatives of the Joint Forces Command and the State Major of the Land Forces were also on hand to witness the event, despite the near-freezing temperatures.

Joint events like this live fire are essential for the Battle Group, according to Adler.

“We are never going to fight alone. We are always going to fight as allies… we are always going to fight together as a team,” Adler explained. “For us to be able to come out here today and operate in these challenging conditions goes a long way to build that partnership and trust.”

Romanian Army Cpt. Tusa, Air Defense Det., NATO eFP BGP, also stressed the importance of partnership and interoperability among multinational detachments, saying the Battle Group is “stronger together.”

Tusa proudly reported the results of the live fire were, “as usual, the best,” and praised his men.
Adler also lauded the Romanian Troops, who first gave him a special tour of the Gepards and then took him for a quick spin through the snow.

“They are just fabulous,” the colonel exclaimed. “Professional, knowledgeable, very friendly… I’m glad to have them as part of the team!”
