    Story by Sgt. Ian Vega-Cerezo

    8th Army

CAMP HUMPHREYS, Republic of Korea – Guy Jones, the deputy commanding officer for maneuver for the 2nd Infantry Division / Republic of Korea-U.S. Combined Division, was promoted from the rank of colonel to brigadier general, in a ceremony at the division headquarters in late December.

The unit streamed the promotion ceremony live online, so family and friends could watch it across the peninsula and overseas due to the pandemic.

“I count myself lucky to have had great trainers and coaches throughout my career and I’ve always looked to the backbone of the Army to advise and coach,” said Jones. “I’ve been blessed with a lot of great NCOs and a lot of great sergeants major that have helped mold me.”

The division commander, Maj. Gen. Steven Gilland, said Jones’ 29 years of military service is held in high regard by his peers and superiors.

“The promotion to brigadier general is unbelievably challenging, but more importantly it’s incredibly humbling,” said Gilland. “Guy and Deb are two of the most humble, selfless servants on our planet and they’ve given a lifetime of commitment, dedication and personal sacrifice.”

Jones has served with the unit for 18 months and he is projected to move on to a new assignment this summer.

“For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required,” said Jones. “That verse has been the driving force behind my career.”
