COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Charlie Crew claims Best Crew title in the Joint Tactical Ground Station-Qatar’s recent detachment competition, Nov. 6-8.

The crew comprising Sgt. Michael Thurmond, engagement controller shift lead; Spc. Vincent Vielma, engagement controller; and Pfc. Jairo Perez, engagement controller, competed against two other crews and earned 892 out of 1,000 points to claim the U.S. Central Command-based unit’s title.

“We put in a lot of effort to work toward this goal,” said Thurmond. “My crew and I are all very proud of winning and look forward to more competitions of this nature in the future.”

The detachment’s crews competed against each other in a series of events promoting technical expertise, military professionalism, missile warning excellence and esprit d ‘corps.

The competition included a rigorous missile warning simulation exercise, written examinations on both military knowledge and Joint Tactical Ground Station operations, a formal board, the Army Combat Fitness Test, and warrant officer and commander mystery events that tested decision making, teamwork and efficiency.

Vielma earned MVP of the competition for his outstanding performance and consistent excellence.

“Winning the MVP was a surprise to me as there were many motivated individuals in the competition,” Vilma said. “However, it felt really good to be acknowledged for the effort I put in and to bring pride to my crew, as well as my detachment.”

The 1st Space Company falls under the 1st Space Battalion, 1st Space Brigade, and is a part of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command. The JTAGS detachment, one of four located around the world, provides in-theater 24/7/365 missile warning to geographic combatant commanders giving them near real-time data of significant events captured through the use of overhead persistent infrared sensors.
