SAN DIEGO – Logistics Specialist 3rd Class Janae C. Mitchell, a native of Detroit, is serving in supply department aboard Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). In November, her hard work and dedication were recognized when she was selected as Vinson’s Junior Sailor of the Quarter (JSOQ), an award given to Sailors who go above and beyond the call of duty and demonstrate the highest standards of work ethic and military bearing.
Mitchell began her Navy career in March 2018 after graduating from New Haven High School in Detroit.
“I joined the Navy to travel,” said Mitchell. “I also wanted to pay for school and to do something different with my life.”
Mitchell reported to Vinson in August 2018 and has been working hard ever since. She credits her selection as JSOQ to her potential as a Sailor and her dedication to her job.
“I believe my chain of command nominated me because they see potential in me and I work as hard as I can every day,” said Mitchell. “When I found out that I had won, I was surprised and excited but at the end of the day, I was very grateful for being chosen.”
Mitchell attributed her success to her biggest supporters.
“I’d like to give a huge shout out to the entire supply department, but also my family back home for always supporting me,” said Mitchell
In her spare time, Mitchell enjoys online shopping, finding new restaurants and new food to try, and spending time with her friends.
