MIHAIL KOGALNICEANU, Romania — A local Issaquah, Wash., native in the U.S. Army is spending her summer in Romania and Bulgaria as a public health nurse leading medical teams who are helping the local citizens as part of a Department of Defense-funded humanitarian civil assistance project.
U.S. Army Maj. Heng Mo. McCall, R.N., an Army Public Health Nurse, assigned to the 212th Combat Support Hospital in Kaiserslautern, Germany, is on a two-month tour in Eastern Europe supporting HCA missions providing medical, dental and optometry screenings, as well as preventative health education to local citizens.
We have gotten to work with civilian Romanian doctors, and the Romanian military doctors, said McCall. "We are providing basic health care needs to the citizens of the villages, and it has been a very eye opening experience to many members of our team, including me."
McCall is taking part of operations related to Joint Task Force-East, a bi-lateral (U.S.-Romanian and U.S.-Bulgarian) U.S. Army Europe mission where U.S. forces are training side-by-side with their host-nation military partners. This HCA mission is a part of the operations in these two countries designed to build relations and facilitate regional theater security cooperation.
"These HCA missions are very important to Joint Task Force-East," said McCall. "The mission of JTF-E is to win the support of the local Romanian's and our mission is a huge part of that."
During this exercise McCall is in charge of the HCA sites and organizes patients to make sure everyone gets what they need.
McCall's family currently resides in Bellevue, Wash.
