FORT CARSON, Colo. – Commander Lt. Col. Mark Cobos transferred command of the 1st Space Battalion to Lt. Col. Michael F. Dyer during a livestreamed ceremony at Fort Carson, Dec. 4.

Dyer is welcomed back to the command after a two-year assignment as the mission director, chief of standardization and evaluation, and chief of plans at the National Space Defense Center at Shriever Air Force Base. Before that he was the 1st Space Battalion executive officer from November 2016 to April 2018.

“I am truly humbled and honored to command this outstanding organization,” Dyer said. “I cannot believe how much the 1st Space Battalion has evolved since I left just over two years ago.”

Col. Brian Bolio, commander, 1st Space Brigade, said Dyer sets clear standards for himself, which helps him be an effective leader to his Soldiers.

“(The Soldiers) can be sure they are getting an outstanding and selfless new commander who will trust, empower and enable each of them to succeed,” Bolio said.
Bolio said that Cobos was a brilliant Army officer and that he has admired him as a space operations officer for more than a decade.

“Mark, a prior (Army) engineer, is someone with intelligence beyond his years,” Bolio said. “(He) grasps very difficult concepts and is able to make sense of them, establishing elaborate campaign plans to drive toward turning challenges into opportunities with as much vigor, passion, and as many adjectives as you could possible put in an problem statement or report.”

Cobos previously served with the Joint Staff, where he led efforts to establish U.S. Space Command, contributed to the U.S. Space Force legislative proposal, and provided military contributions to space-related initiatives and strategies of the National Security Council, National Space Council and the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy. He is headed to U.S. Space Command where he will serve as a special project officer.

He thanked his family for their support and said they were the foundation of why he serves. Cobos said his two years serving as the 1st Space Battalion commander were among his best.

“Serving the Soldiers of this battalion has been the greatest professional experience of my life,” he said.

The 1st Space Battalion, established in December 1999, is the Army’s only active duty space battalion. It consists of a Headquarters and Headquarters Company; 1st Space Company with four Joint Tactical Ground Stations in Europe, Korea, Japan and Qatar; 2nd Space Company with six Army Space Support Teams; and 4th Space Company with six space control detachments. The battalion is assigned to the 1st Space Brigade, U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command.
