SAN DIEGO – Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) observes National Radiologic Technology Week during the week of November 8 to celebrate advancement in radiology.
The celebration commemorates the discovery of the X-ray by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen on Nov. 8, 1895.
National Radiologic Technology Week showcases the important roles medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals play in patient care and healthcare safety.
NMCSD's Radiology Department, including its branch clinics, conducts approximately 3,500 studies, or work orders, per week. They provide advanced imaging like X-ray, MRI and CT scans used throughout almost every one of the hospital's medical departments.
"It's amazing how much the Radiology department is involved in around the hospital," said Cmdr. Erik Ramey, NMCSD's Radiology department chairman. "Imaging, as it has evolved, has become a critical piece of technology in the medical field."
The Navy has always been at the forefront of innovative technology, and military medicine is no exception.
Ramey said that NMCSD has recently received several new, advanced CT scanners that offer more accurate imaging than previous equipment, along with a linear accelerator, a device used to offer more precise radiation treatment, minimizing radiation exposure outside of the target zone.
Radiologic technology has significantly advanced since the discovery of the X-ray. Medical imaging and the understanding of radiologic medicine continue to improve patient outcomes and associated treatments.
NMCSD’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
