Lifeguards make a splash at Normandy Pool

FORT BRAGG, NORTH CAROLINA, UNITED STATES

    08.10.2009

    Story by Pfc. Eric Guzman

    50th Public Affairs Detachment

FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- No matter where you may be, safety is always paramount, and this is especially so in an environment that may prove dangerous if not respected.

Used daily as a place of recreation and exercise, a swimming pool can be dangerous to fun seekers if they are not properly educated about water and pool safety. In these instances, there are lifeguards around to make sure everyone has fun as safely as possible.

"You know, I just come in and try to have a good day, make sure nobody gets hurt. We've had people that are deathly scared of water, and we've talked them into getting into the water and not being scared of it," said Spc. Alex G. Hall, a life guard here and a Military Policeman from the 65th Military Police Company, 2nd Platoon. "It's kind of cool actually to see people put their trust in you, knowing that they're not going to drown."

To ensure that they are prepared to answer to any and all problems that may arise, the lifeguards of Ft. Bragg are trained in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and can operate an Automated External Defibrillator, along with their exceptional swimming skills. They also maintain a custom tailored Physical Training regimen to ensure that they are more than able to handle any accident that comes up.

"We swim laps, do sit-ups, push-ups, pull-presses, we also have practice rescues on Sundays. All of us come out here on Sunday, and we decide who's going to play the drown victim and the lifeguards all have to figure out who's drowning and figure out what kind of rescue to perform," said Dana Hice, a Diamond Bar, Calif., native, life guard, water safety instructor and pool manager.

Through their hard work and dedication to maintaining a safe environment for all to swim, the lifeguards of Ft. Bragg have managed to prevent any major accidents this year. They also provide swim classes as well as drown proofing in the mornings for any aspiring swimmers that want to take that initial plunge.

"We do the drown proofing from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. usually, sometimes until 11:30 a.m." said Hall.

Not only are Ft. Bragg's lifeguards stationed by the pool to ensure good clean fun, but they are there to teach as well. Informing all pool patrons about water safety prevents them from having to rescue anyone, which means they've covered all of their bases and have done their jobs well.
