FORT CARSON, Colo. — Soldiers and civilians gathered at Founders Field to witness the Warrior Transition Battalion (WTB) retire its colors and uncase the Soldier Recovery Unit (SRU) colors during a reflagging ceremony Sept. 21, 2020.

The SRU also hosted a change of responsibility ceremony to bid farewell to Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Amason III and welcome Command Sgt. Maj. Keith King. The Fort Carson Mounted Color Guard and the 4th Infantry Division Band took part in the ceremony.

Evans Army Community Hospital Commander Col. Kevin Bass served as the reviewing officer for the ceremony.

“The reflagging and name change reflects a restructuring of the program, which updates policies and procedures, simplifies entry criteria and focuses resources and support at the unit level to ensure the unique needs of each Soldier are provided for,” Bass said. “Although the name has changed, the mission has not.”

The SRU’s mission is to provide mission command, primary care and case management for Soldiers in recovery and establish conditions for healing to promote a timely recovery for either a return to the force or transition to civilian life.

Nearly 4,000 Soldiers at Fort Carson have completed this program since its launch in 2007. More than 800 Soldiers have returned to active duty, the National Guard or Reserve component units.

The unit was initially designated as the Fort Carson SRU in March, but the reflagging ceremony marks the official deactivation of the WTB.

The previous Warrior Care and Transition Program under the WTB has also transitioned to the Army Recovery Care Program (ARCP) under the SRU. The ARCP presents a new, streamlined process for Soldiers through their rehabilitation journey.

SRU Soldiers must first enter the Complex Care Platoon, where medical providers determine their rehabilitation track. Soldiers in the SRU will move on to either the Return to Duty Platoon or the Veteran Track Platoon based off guidance from the medical providers.

“The Soldier Recovery Unit will continue to ensure that our nation’s heroes, who require complex care, have a place where they can go to focus on their recovery and get back to the fight — fully confident in their physical and mental health,” Bass said.
