SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 13, 2020) – Navy Medicine Training Support Center (NMTSC) observed the 245th birthday of the U.S. Navy with a cake-cutting ceremony at the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC), Oct. 13.

This year’s theme, “Victory at Sea,” encompasses the Navy’s efforts in battle during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

“As I watched the recruiting video that was playing before the ceremony started, it reminded me of why I joined the Navy--for the adventure, the higher purpose, the teamwork,” said Capt. Ann Case, commanding officer, NMTSC. “I ask you today, what were your reasons for joining the Navy? Probably ones very similar. As President Kennedy said, 'Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.' You did that by joining the Navy. Happy 245th birthday to the greatest military service; the U.S. Navy.”

A POW/MIA table presentation followed the CO’s opening remarks.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I call your attention to the small table at the stage,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Brittani Ciomperlik, an instructor with the Medical Laboratory Technician program at the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC). “A place has been prepared, but no one is seated at the table. This table is symbolic of the fact that many members of our profession of arms are missing from our midst. The place setting is for our fallen comrades; those who have gone before us in the service of our nation, and who have not yet returned. They are commonly referred to as prisoners of war, or those missing in action. They are unable to be with us today, so we set this table to honor and remember them.”

The reading of the birthday messages followed the presentation.

As with tradition, the oldest and youngest Sailors in attendance, joined center stage to perform the ceremonial cake cutting. Capt. Joseph Gomez, NMTSC’s executive officer and Seaman Recruit Hailey Dowd, a native of Essexville, Michigan, were this year’s selected participants.

“Traditionally, regardless of location, Sailors pause to observe our birthday by sharing a cake,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Randall Winters, an instructor with the Hospital Corpsman Basic program at the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) and master of ceremonies for the event. “The Navy’s birthday cake-cutting ceremony is important, as it is an annual renewal of each navy sailor’s commitment to our nation’s quest for peace and freedom, worldwide.”

The event concluded with the singing of ‘Anchors Aweigh’ led by Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Jeremy Olds, an instructor with the Hospital Corpsman Basic program at the METC, and the benediction, led by Lt. Jerry Roberts, command chaplain, NMTSC.

NMTSC is the Navy component command providing administrative and operational control over Navy staff and students assigned to the METC and other medical programs in the San Antonio area.
