WIESBADEN, Germany -- Children under twelve whose family members have been quarantined due to contact with a Covid-19 case are currently not allowed to enter a care facility. This is not to be equated with a quarantine, but leads to uncertainty. “We receive a lot of questions on this topic both on the service phone and by e-mail. Therefore, we would like to clarify with this press release”, says Dr. Kaschlin Butt, head of the health authority.

According to the 2nd regulation to combat the coronavirus, last updated Oct. 19, 2020, this entry ban applies to children under the age of twelve if their parents or siblings have been quarantined by the health authority as first-degree contact persons. This means: If children under the age of twelve live in a household with a person who has been quarantined by the health authority, they are not allowed to enter their day-care centers, schools and other education facilities during this quarantine period. However, they are not subject to any further quarantine measures.

The absence in the care facility is considered excused according to the above mentioned regulation of the state of Hessen. This is an entry ban, which the parents must consider and act accordingly. Siblings over twelve years of age are not released from their mandatory attendance in schools, education centers, universities or colleges.

According to the 2nd regulation, children, schoolchildren and students are not allowed to visit their facility if they or members of the same household have symptoms of illness for COVID-19, in particular fever, dry cough (not caused by chronic diseases) or loss of taste and smell. This regulation is independent of the age.

In addition, the health authority repeatedly receives detailed questions about how to deal with corona cases in schools. "Ultimately, we check each case individually and take into account all the circumstances," says Dr. Butt. "For this reason, the case processing in our office is very extensive." The schools have an information letter for parents written by the health authority to be able to explain the processes in the case of a suspected or confirmed corona-positive person at a school.
