SAN DIEGO – Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) celebrated the Navy's 245th birthday with a cake-cutting ceremony Oct. 13.
On Oct. 13, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the dispatch of two armed vessels to stop British ships from bringing supplies to British forces in America. As a result of their decision, the Navy and Naval Committee were formed.
Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Brenda Tzintzun, the celebration's master of ceremonies and NMCSD's Pediatric Clinic leading petty officer, opened the ceremony with a brief history of the Navy's origins, then welcomed NMCSD's commanding officer to speak during the event.
"We are the most powerful Navy in the world, and everyone here is a part of it," said Capt. Bradford Smith, NMCSD's commanding officer. "It's impressive what we have been able to do throughout history, and it's great that we can celebrate the Navy's 245th birthday."
After the ceremony, Sailors and staff were offered individually-wrapped cakes and cookies.
In addition to the cake cutting ceremony, NMCSD's Sailor 360 program hosted a virtual, physical training event to promote morale and physical development of Sailors in honor of the Navy's birthday.
By observing long-standing naval traditions, NMCSD continues to uphold the Navy's core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment.
NMCSD’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
