Promoting positivity during a time of uncertainty, Grissom’s chaplain began hosting a relationship course.

Magic 5 hours, developed by Dr. John Gottman, is a relationship course that teaches couples five simple things that they can do to improve the quality of their relationship that only takes five hours a week.

Gottman and his wife Julie have an institute that has studied marriage for over 30 years.

“Together they developed a very scientific method of studying how couples interact and are able to predict the ability of that marriage to last or not to the point that they claim that they can predict it within a 91 percent accuracy within 5-15 minutes of talking to a couple,” said Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Alex Jack, 434th Air Refueling Wing chaplain.

Jack explained that while communication is important it’s the smaller things that can often be left out that can make a huge impact on a relationship.

“Magic 5 hours is based off the simple concept that really the success of a marriage doesn’t just come down to all of the big things that we talk about, for example communication, but it comes down to doing the little things,” said Jack.

As in its name, the program is designed with five simple things that couples can do each day adding up to five hours a week.

“There are five basic principles that I will discuss in the class,”said Jack. “It doesn’t guarantee that your marriage will last but it will definitely improve it, and it will go a long way towards building a positive relationship.”

With a roller coaster of a year, many are feeling the effects of the stress and strain of the unknown.

“Relationship issues are always at the top of counseling situations; so definitely what we found through COVID-19 is adding strain and stress on relationships and for some people it’s definitely more pronounced,” said Jack. “So this is an attempt to say hey it’s not going to fix all of our problems but it’s a way to help us deal with some of those strains that have been placed on us by COVID-19.”

The sessions will keep up with current social distancing guidelines as they are offered virtually and when people attend that is when they are able to learn what exactly those five things are about.

“Right now I am doing them virtually and the session lasts anywhere between 30-45 minutes,” said Jack. “If you want to know more of what those five things are please attend one of my sessions.”

For future course dates or one-on-one counseling sessions please contact Chaplain Jack at 765-688-4026.
