The safety office at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point has recently made an exciting addition to its mobile safety app in an effort to help Marines and leaders avoid heat related illness and injuries. Service members, and anyone needing up-to-date heat condition information, can now access the Automated Heat Stress System (AHSS) for real time heat stress flag conditions.

“Save lives by preventing heat related mishaps,” said Michael Small, an occupational safety and health specialist at the MCAS Cherry Point Safety Office. “Our goal is to provide the information people need in order to make risk decisions based off of good and current information when it comes to unit level physical training and training events, or when individuals are prepping to PT.”

The AHSS is used to determine flag conditions (none, green, yellow, red, and black) based on the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature Index, a measure of the heat stress in direct sunlight which is utilized across the Marine Corps. AHSS also automatically collects, archives, and graphically displays heat stress information that all units training aboard MCAS Cherry Point can access.

“In addition to providing another method for reporting hazards and mishaps, the goal of the Cherry Point safety app is to provide meaningful safety related information to personnel,” said Small. “Adding the AHSS to the app allows every person aboard MCAS Cherry Point, and outlying fields, the ability to check the flag conditions.”

To locate the information on the safety app, personnel need to select the flag icon, and select the corresponding map for the live reading of the heat condition. Patrons have the ability to choose between MCAS Cherry Point, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, MCAS Beaufort, Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego and MCRD Parris Island. Cherry Point currently has two AHSS up and running with six more being installed across the installation and its outlying airfields.

“The systems are becoming more common on Marine Corps bases/installations,” said Small. “However, as far as I know, Cherry Point and Beaufort are the only ones providing data real time directly to a safety app.”

The MCAS Cherry Point safety app provides Marines with resources and the ability to report hazards and mishaps. By utilizing this information, that is readily available on the safety app, Marines are able to properly manage the risk of becoming a heat casualty during a physical training session or planned training event.
