CAMP TAJI, Iraq — It's often said that you can't really know your fellow Soldiers until you've deployed with them. This is especially true in the reserves. When you live in close quarters with someone and work with them you tend to see people for their true selves. Well, here at Camp Taji, Iraq, two fine "WolfPack" non-commissioned officers saw each other's true selves, and in each other they saw those certain traits that just draw two people together.

Sgt. Nathan Thomas a native of Moreno Valley, Calif., and Sgt. Mary Christine Olog of Hayward, Calif., see a happy future together once this deployment comes to an end.

Building a meaningful romantic relationship in a warzone is not the easiest thing. These two best friends would spend time together knowing that their relationship could be more, but professionalism always had to come first.

Sgt. Olog, now Sgt. Thomas, recounts, "It was difficult just being friends with Nathan when we knew that we both felt something more. In this environment, that strong a friendship might be just what a Soldier needs."

Sgt. Thomas fondly reminisces, "Getting off work and talking to Christine was always a great way to end an otherwise forgettable day."

In mid March, these NCOs were able to take a relaxing leave to Italy. There they realized how important they had become in each other's lives. On March 23, 2009, in Florence, Italy, they finally decided to tie the knot. It was a small but romantic wedding in which vows were exchanged in both English and Italian. These best friends who had left for Italy returned as a happily married couple.
Here at the 419th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, we wish them all the best for the future.

    Cheers, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas!
