Command Sgt. Major Knott takes the helm as the NETCOM Command Sergeant Major

    SIERRA VISTA, AZ, UNITED STATES

Story by Sgt. 1st Class Joshua Brandenburg

U.S. Army Network Enterprise Technology Command

Command Sgt. Maj. Richard D. Knott recently became the new Command Sergeant Major of the Network Enterprise Technology Command (NETCOM), June 1, 2020. Knott’s previous assignment was as the Command Sergeant Major, United States Army Signal School, Fort Gordon, Ga.

His Army story has been a long one, enlisting in 1990 as a Multi-Channel Communications System Operator; he now brings 30 years of Soldier and leadership experience to NETCOM. However, his desire to serve started before enlisting.

“I was in JROTC [Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps] in high school and the example of discipline and leadership my instructors imparted on me became something I wanted to emulate. I stayed because I fell in love with the people, the comradery, and once I became a leader, the joy of mentoring and developing Soldiers,” said Knott.

Knott, a native of Indianapolis, Indiana, claims his success in the U.S. Army has been made possible by two things: treating others with the utmost dignity and respect, and always doing the right thing.

“Treat everyone with dignity and respect, it doesn’t matter the rank, status or position. This will go a long way in gaining the trust and support of those you are charged to lead and support. Second, continue to do the right thing all the time, no matter how difficult the task, or how challenging the situation,” said Knott.

Soldiers, of all ranks, are encouraged to find and learn from a mentor of higher rank and title. This allows for successful, longer-serving men and women to pass down their knowledge, whether it be stories of success or of failures in order to teach the next generation of American troops. Developing younger Soldiers helps organizations carry on as people leave, and Knott has taken this attribute to heart.

“I focus on continuing to develop myself, so I can develop those around me. I view all Soldiers as leaders, some of us are wearing the rank and serving in positions and the junior Soldiers are leaders in training,” added Knott. “Just remember, to always put others first, and whatever we require of our Soldiers we should require the same of ourselves.”

The job of the NETCOM Command Sergeant Major is to act as the senior enlisted leader and advisor to the Commander, Major General Maria Barrett.

Knott concluded with, “to the families of NETCOM thank you for your continued support, and to the Soldiers, civilians, and contractors of this incredible organization, thank you for your dedication. Your expertise and passion to serve are noted daily. I look forward to working with you all.”
