SAN DIEGO – Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) physicians have worked in conjunction with other researchers and Google Health to develop a new kind of deep learning system (DLS) to help diagnose prostate cancer and published their findings in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) Oncology’s July 23, 2020 edition.
The DLS demonstrates an ability to accurately identify the Gleason score of a biopsy sample, which tells providers the severity of a patient’s prostate cancer.
According to the article, the DLS agrees more consistently with prostate cancer subspecialists than do general pathologists, and there is an approximately 94.5% agreement with both specialists and general pathologists when determining the presence of a tumor in a biopsy.
This means a biopsy sample could potentially be placed on a slide, scanned, and evaluated with a faster turnaround time and comparable accuracy than would be available with a strictly human medical team. More accurate testing and analysis means future prostate cancer patients may get a more consistent level of treatment, resulting in fewer of the potential morbidities which are associated with cancer treatment.
This means more patients get the right kind of treatment faster, and in the case of prostate cancer, that is one out of every nine men.
"Thousands of Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, and Airmen develop cancer
and the military spends billions of dollars on cancer care,” said Cmdr. Niels Olson, one of the doctors who worked on the project. “I truly believe work like this can save lives and save money. It's also a tremendous opportunity for the Navy to work with and learn from the best pathologists and most advanced artificial intelligence researchers in the world."
NMCSD’s partners in this project include Google Health and Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine.
