Story by Tech. Sgt. Lucretia Cunningham

    192nd Wing

“I work full-time in supply, but when the AGR (Active Guard Reserve) job in comm opened up, it was the perfect opportunity for me to switch over to something I’m truly interested in. I was always interested in information technology, and I’m good with computers. I’m also in school to get my degree in IT, taking 15 credit hours per semester.

The flexibility of being full-time or DSG (drill status guardsman) and the education benefits is what brought me to the Guard in the first place. I grew up in Hampton and graduated from Phoebus [High School] in 2016 and everyone was going to college. The difference for me is, by using my Post 9/11 G.I. Bill, I’ll have a trade and experience in something plus a degree without debt.

I’m a really competitive person. I’m competitive in anything that I can be competitive in. When I enlisted, supply was just a job I picked to get into the Guard, but it’s become another thing I can conquer and be the best in. And there’s always new challenges in the military. For example, with me in the process of cross-training, I’m going to have to go to tech school again and do CDCs (career development courses) twice, but that’s nothing for me—I like the challenge of that. And then, when I see the end result of my work, it’s more motivation to keep going.

Comm is what I want to do with my life. Even after the military, I want to start my own business in cyber security, so it’s perfect for me.”
