Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson named 2020 best Air Force installation

    CE Weekly Article //

The Office of the Secretary of Defense announced the winners of the Commander-in-Chief’s (CINC) Installation Excellence Award (IEA) on Friday, 21 August 2020. Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson has been selected as the 2020 Air Force nominee for the CINC IEA, and Joint Base San Antonio has been selected as the runner-up.

Each year, the CINC IEA is given to the best installation in the United States Air Force. This award, created by the President Ronald Reagan in 1985, was established to recognize the outstanding efforts of the people who operate and maintain Department of Defense installations.

In 2020, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, and Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, were selected as the 2020 CINC IEA finalists. Both installations were evaluated in January 2020 during in-person visits by an Installation Excellence Selection Board led by Maj. Gen. John Hickok (Mobilization Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Engineering and Force Protection, Headquarters U.S. Air Force), three wing commanders, and a command chief, to determine the Air Force’s winning installation.

As the installation lead for Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, the 673 ABW is responsible for more than 5,000 joint military and civilian personnel, supporting America’s arctic warriors and their families. The Wing supports and enables three Air Force Total-Force Wings, an Army Brigade, and 58 tenant units, including the headquarters for the United States Alaskan Command, 11 Air Force, U.S. Army Alaska, and the Alaskan North American Aerospace Defense Command Region.

In addition, the Wing provides medical care to more than 35,000 joint service members, dependents, Veterans Administration patients and retirees throughout Alaska. The 673 ABW maintains $12.4 billion in infrastructure encompassing more than 73,000 acres, ensuring Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson remains America's premier strategic power projection platform.

Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington, and Hurlburt Field, Florida, were recognized as honorable mentions. Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson will receive $1.25 million, and Joint Base San Antonio will receive $750,000. Each CINC IEA honorable mention will receive $200,000.

The 2021 call for CINC IEA nominations was released by OSD in August 2020.
