KHOST PROVINCE, Afghanistan - An Afghan national policeman who was standing guard at a bazaar in Khost City observed a suspicious man wearing bulky clothes, Aug. 11. The policeman learned the man was a suicide bomber and after he was safely away from civilians, the policeman shot and killed the man. No civilians were hurt.
"The heroic actions of this ANP officer demonstrate how the Afghans are choosing hope and life instead of war and death," said Army Lt. Col. Clarence Counts, Combined Joint Task Force-82, spokesman.
NANGARHAR PROVINCE — A suicide bomber was putting on his vest when it accidentally exploded in his home near the village of Nokurkheyl, Aug. 11. There were no International Security Assistance Force service members in the area and there were no civilian injuries.
PAKTIKA PROVINCE — Afghan border patrolmen battled insurgents for approximately two hours in the southern Paktika provincial city of Gardey Dasha, Aug. 11. No ABP were hurt in the fight, but five Taliban were killed and approximately 16 Taliban were injured. The ABP also captured weapons from the Taliban, including hand grenades. After the fight, local villagers observed the injured Taliban being carried back over the Pakistan border.
KONAR PROVINCE — The Afghan national army was conducting a joint patrol in the Pech District, Aug. 12, when they stopped a vehicle with six passengers that had no license plate. During a search of the vehicle, a 14-year-old boy approached the scene and told the ANA soldiers that the car's occupants were Taliban. The search of the vehicle yielded a phone book with numbers for many Taliban members and a cellular telephone with a missed call from a regional Taliban commander. Five of the occupants were detained by ANA troops.
