    101st Air Refueling Wing

MAINE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Me. (July 29, 2020) -- Freedom of Religion has always been an American right. A right that's afforded to every American and the 101st Air Refueling Wing encourages their airmen to exercise this right.

Lieutenant Colonel David Michaud, the Wing Chaplain here at the 101st offered insight on services the chapel offers. The most essential duty of the chapel is to defend first amendment rights. “There are a lot of things we have to give up when you leave civilian life to become a person in the armed forces,” said Michaud. “And one of the things you don’t have to give up is your right for free exercise of religion.”

The Chaplain also advises leadership and offers counsel to airmen. This can be both spiritual and personal as their duty goes beyond religion. Morale is as much part of their duty. They ensure airmen know what religious and counseling services are available to them. The Chaplain manages the religious program on the base. If they can’t perform a service then it is their job to provide an alternative for airmen.

The Chaplains' duties include offering spiritual guidance to airmen abroad and at home. While deployed chapels are set up to offer personnel opportunities to worship. This protects the individual’s right to practice their faith even while deployed. Services held on Sundays of drill weekend allow airmen opportunities to worship. This allows them to complete the mission without having to sacrifice their religion. Chaplain Michaud emphasized that his team is a dynamic group of airmen and are always looking to expand through new members willing to spread the good word.
