OCEANSIDE, Calif. — California Army National Guard Soldiers from the 40th Military Police Company, 143rd Military Police Battalion, 49th Military Police (MP) Brigade, established aerial retransmission during the battalion’s annual training July 17, 2020, in the remote hills of Marine Corp Base Camp Pendleton, California.

This communication equipment training is real-world, providing units critical communication, as well as practice to deploy into a variety of environments from civil support response to a combat setting.

“At a fundamental level, this kind of training in new environments refines our ability to move, shoot and communicate,” said 1st Lt. Christopher Oliver, 143rd communications officer.

Communications Soldiers utilized a COM201B lightweight very high frequency (VHF) antenna combined with an OE-254 antenna mast during the training. This configuration allows maximum transmission range as antenna elevation is critical in this frequency band. Placing the OE-254 on all the mast sections makes a significant difference in its coverage area.

The unique tripod leg structure of the COM201B allows the antenna to be mounted directly on the ground or mounted on a standard communications mast. The antenna covers the 30 to 88 MHz band, commonly used in the Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System (SINCGARS) without external tuning, said Oliver.

The training continues through the end of July.

The 143rd is one of Cal Guard’s newest units, having held its activation ceremony Nov. 17, 2018, at its Lancaster, California, readiness center. The battalion unites three MP companies, a chemical unit and headquarters element under its command.

The 143rd extends the arm of the 49th, which had operated with two battalions for many years. The 185th MP Battalion and 579th Engineer Battalion now serve as the 143rd’s sister units.
