    NMCSD Recognizes Men’s Health Month

    SAN DIEGO, CA, UNITED STATES

    06.29.2020

    Story by Seaman Luke Cunningham

    Naval Medical Center San Diego

SAN DIEGO – During June, men are given the opportunity to reflect on their health and well-being during Men’s Health Month, a national observance focused on encouraging boys, men and families to practice healthy lifestyles.
Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) encourages male service members to take control of their health, and teach their families the importance of healthy living.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men in the United States, on average, die five years earlier than women. They also die at higher rates from the three leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer and unintentional injuries.
There are simple things male service members can do to lower their risk of such health issues and improve their overall well-being and lifespan.
For example, all service members are encouraged to get routine, physical examinations.
Prevention is one of the best ways to stay ahead of illness and complications. Establishing baselines for factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, and monitoring how they change over time, will enable a healthcare provider to detect potentially dangerous conditions early.
Exercise is another way male service members can improve their health.
Regular, physical activity has extensive benefits that can improve a person's lifespan, boost testosterone levels, decrease their chances of heart disease and prevent injury. Lack of motivation is sometimes a prohibitor when it comes to working out, but implementing a goal and routine, as well as having a workout partner to hold you accountable, can help keep male service members on track.
Taking care of your mental health is just as important as your physical health.
Male service members may have many, unique challenges to overcome in the military. Stressful, sometimes dangerous work environments, as well as family separation and deployments may take their toll on military men. Taking the time to seek help by talking to someone about these issues can help service members cope and deal with these struggles to improve their mental health. The Navy offers numerous services that men in the military can utilize to find the help they need. Service members of all genders are encouraged to reach out to their healthcare provider or chaplain if interested in improving their mental health.
Men's Health Month was established in 1994 during then-President Clinton’s administration. For 26 years, the month has been observed to help men become healthier, and improve their ability to be capable leaders, and take care of themselves and their families.
NMCSD’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training, and research. NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians, and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
