NMCSD’s Pediatrics Clinic Expands Patient Care for Immunizations

SAN DIEGO – Naval Medical Center San Diego’s (NMCSD) Pediatrics Clinic is scheduled to expand its patient care levels for immunizations June 8.
Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the clinic temporarily postponed appointments for infants older than 15 months beginning mid-March, but continued to provide in-person well-child care and immunizations for two, four, six, 12 and 15-month-old patients.

“We plan on slowly increasing our patient load by beginning to see patients more than five months old,” said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Jeffrey Galat, from Sacramento, Calif., NMCSD’s Pediatrics Clinic’s work center supervisor.

In addition to providing appointments for beneficiaries calling to obtain needed vaccinations, the clinic has identified patients who have missed immunization appointments due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will contact these families to offer appointments.

The clinic has ensured beneficiaries remain as up-to-date as possible on their immunizations to help ensure that the COVID-19 pandemic does not leave children at risk for vaccine-preventable infections. The clinic offers virtual care for most acute concerns, but also has in-person care available when deemed appropriate. Separate teams consisting of hospital staff have been created and waiting room spaces have been altered to adhere to social-distancing policies. Families utilizing the clinic for well-child and immunization visits can feel confident that it is safe to bring their child in to be seen.

NMCSD’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training, and research. NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians, and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
