CAMP HANSEN, OKINAWA, Japan – Sgt. Christopher Delgado, a tactical and digital wideband transmissions supervisor with Alpha Company, 7th Communication Battalion, was recently awarded the PFC Herbert A. Littleton Noncommissioned Officer Trophy for Operational Communications Excellence.

This award is in named in honor of Korean War posthumous Medal of Honor recipient PFC Herbert A. Littleton who, while assisting in the calling of artillery fire, threw himself on a grenade in order to save the lives of his team. This award recognizes outstanding contributions of a NCO performing operational communications duties in support of the Marine Corps’ operational communications mission.

SSgt. Levy Vega, the tactical network platoon sergeant with Alpha Co., 7th Comm. Bn., said, “Sgt. Delgado is a highly knowledgeable, humble, and approachable leader. He utilizes his ingenuity and creativity to achieve mission success while always teaching his fellow Marines to pass the torch to the next generation.”

“Outstanding contributions” certainly describes Delgado’s actions during his tour in Okinawa with 7th Comm. Bn. Throughout the past two years, he has participated in five training exercises across the Indo-Pacific theater and conducted multiple communication operations here on Okinawa.

SSgt. Vega stated, “He has proven the battalions abilities to communicate over the Pacific Ocean to our sister unit on Camp Pendleton, while also mastering new communications methods – making the platoon more adaptable to any situation.”

Delgado’s adaptability and ingenuity is a key contributor to his, and Alpha Company’s success. With today’s technological advancements, it is critical that military communicators are able to improvise and troubleshoot to ensure the ability to communicate securely and consistently.

“Equipment that has been the bread and butter of the communications community for nearly twenty years is being phased out for more advanced technology,” said 1st Lt. Ryan Collette, the tactical network platoon commander. “This new technology allows the Marine Corps to add depth and strength to our communications infrastructure which, in turn, enables commanders at the tip of the spear to make decisions faster.”

This new equipment allows the Marine Corps to maintain competitiveness in communications. When superiority isn’t always guaranteed, resourcefulness is a necessary skill for Marines. Delgado said this about his drive to try new things, “I wanted to find new ways to improve, not only the way we communicate, but facilitate the way we communicate by experimenting with different types of equipment.”

“Sgt. Delgado has given the mindset to the next generation of Marines of 'being creative with comm,” said Vega. “While passing his knowledge and giving them a foundation to work off, he has empowered those around him to think creatively, following the guidance provided by the Commandant.”

Training and passing knowledge to the younger generation of Marines will establish a trend of success, not only across the Marine Corps, but across his company and battalion as a whole. Bringing the award to 7th Comm. Bn. brings pride to his unit, and sets the model for those to follow.

”He put his heart and soul into developing his junior Marines and preparing them for future fights,” said Collette. “Though extremely talented, Sgt. Delgado understands that he is not successful unless his subordinates understand the mission and how to employ the gear appropriately.”

With his tour in Okinawa coming to an end, Delgado is heading to Twentynine Palms in California.

“Sergeant Delgado has brought a level of maturity and hunger for knowledge that is infectious throughout Alpha Company,” said Collette. “His contributions to the communications field will continue in 29 Palms, where he will push the next generation of communicators to excel.”
