NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. – Becoming a parent presents new challenges for most individuals. There is a learning curve: adjusting to a different role in your life and taking care of a fragile human. While that may seem scary or challenging, one Marine explains how celebrating her first Mother’s Day and raising a child for the last six months has made everything better.
Sgt. Dilia Vicharra, a canvassing recruiter, with Recruiting Station Tampa, just celebrated her first Mother’s Day May 10, 2020 with her daughter Sophia and husband, Zackery Vicharra.
“I was like ‘Wow, I’m a mom,’" said Dilla. "It was an honor. Every year, I celebrate my mom and my grandmother. Now I am someone’s mom and that just makes me want to be better too, so that one day she will talk about how proud she is to be my daughter.”
Dilia said the day was spent taking photos and documenting this special moment by doing an impromptu photoshoot with her daughter and grandmother.
"I teared up a little bit seeing Sophia with her mom,” Zackery said. “We’re just really blessed we have a healthy young daughter.”
The Vicharras expressed how having a child has changed their mindset.
“One thing that is motivating me is I want my daughter to look up to me, and know you can be a mom with a career and succeed,” said Dilia. “She is making me become the best version of myself and to be an even better Marine.”
Zackery expressed a similar kind of motivation when it came to starting a family and how the birth of Sophia has changed things for the better. He said that he is more motivated in school, more motivated in his process to become a naval officer, and it is more of a priority to get it down now.
