With the challenges of Coronavirus Disease 2019 and physically distancing in an effort to flatten the curve, Team Fairchild will be conducting Wingman Day virtually, April 17.
Wingman Day focuses on maintaining Airmen connectedness, along with physical, social, spiritual and mental fitness by personal interaction within the squadrons. The decision to make the upcoming Wingman Day still occur is to allow Airmen to maintain their readiness and positive mindset in today’s stressful environment.
“We have all of these added stressors on us above and beyond the day-to-day of being a parent, paying the bills, working, and dealing with conflicts that are going on in our lives with other people,” said Dawn Altmaier, 92nd Air Refueling Wing community support coordinator. “We’re able to take this day to connect with others and fill our own cups spiritually, mentally, physically and socially, so that we are better Airmen, and so we can take a breather.”
With Wingman Day being virtual, it is up to the units’ discretions on what the activities will be.
Units will be broken down into small groups with a dedicated time for when the activities will start, said Altmaier. Some suggested ideas are to watch a TedX talk or short film that Airmen can discuss, start a book club, or like the show ‘MTV cribs’, Airmen can record virtual tours of their homes with a focus on things that are unique and humorous.
Wingman Day is more important now that Airmen are separated and unable to connect as they may normally with their wingmen.
“It’s important to stay connected,” said Chief Master Sgt. Jason Hodges, 92nd Air Refueling Wing command chief. “With everything going on in the world right now, I think it’s time for our Airmen to reconnect even though they’re physically apart.”
In addition to allowing Airmen a way to connect with wingmen from their squadron, virtual Wingman Day serves as a way to keep normalcy throughout the base.
“It’s important to keep that sense of normalcy despite everything that is happening right now in the world, we do a Wingman Day every April and October,” Altmaier said. “I think that most people see it for what it is, a day that takes care of them, and that the Air Force is allowing them this time to focus on its most valuable resource, the people.”
