CAMP ATTERBURY JOINT MANEUVER TRAINING CENTER, Ind. — During an assumption of command ceremony here, Maj. Gen. Tod Carmony of the 38th Infantry Division handed over the command of Task Force Cyclone to Brig. Gen. Lonnie Culver, July 18.
The ceremony officially placed Culver as the commander for the duration of Task Force Cyclone's deployment to Afghanistan. Also, the new Task Force Cyclone "colors" were unveiled during the ceremony. In military organizations, colors are an assemblage of flags and streamers meant to display a unit's heritage or lineage and battle honors. Task Force Cyclone will carry the new colors for the duration of the deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
During Carmony's speech, he talked about the military's customs of changing units.
"We've closed units down, we've cased colors, but when we case colors, someplace else we uncase colors," he said. "Units come and units go, but the Army goes on, the Guard goes on. This is just part of that tradition."
During Culver's speech he spoke of the division's history, current training, the mission and his appreciation for being able to command the dedicated Soldiers of the task force.
"I am proud of every Soldier in this task force and I appreciate your service and the sacrifices that you and your family have made for you to serve with us," Culver told the audience. "I look forward to serving with all the great Soldiers in this task force in the next year."
This is the first combat deployment of a headquarters company from the 38th Infantry Division since World War II.
Task Force Cyclone's mission will be to assist the Afghan government with security, construction, economic and agricultural support in the assigned area of operations as well as to facilitate the reception, training, housing and sustainment of U.S. troops entering the country.
