    Admiral Nimitz Galley Serves Sailors

Sailors wearing cloth masks line up six feet apart awaiting entrance to the Admiral Nimitz Hall Galley. They are there to pick up a meal to go, part of the many changes in the daily operations on military bases to protect Sailors and their families amidst the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. For their part the galley has implemented safety precautions to sustain Sailors health and nutritional needs on Ault Field.

The current precautions at the galley include following physical distancing guidelines recommended by the CDC, increasing sanitation, and pre-packaging meals for regular customers and Sailors in Restriction of Movement (ROM) status.

“The galleys never close, as culinary specialists we have to be prepared to take these extra measures and we are needed in providing meals,” said Culinary Specialist Seaman Kayann Dixon, assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron 133 (VAQ-133).

ROM status personnel may have been in contact with an individual who has COVID-19, tested positive for COVID-19, or have embarked or returned from deployment. Meals prepared for those in ROM Status are pre-made, kept hot, and ready for pick-up at designated locations near the galley. Those in ROM status have a representative who delivers their meals reducing contact with staff. Additionally, the galley delivers meals off base to Sailors not in ROM status who are not able to leave their home.

The dining area remains closed until further notice. Until physical distancing guidelines change, the entrance to the galley remains one way. Customers must stand six feet apart, enter with face protection, order their food, and leave through a designated exit.

“This is a unique situation and it feels pretty good to be able to use the training that we've been given throughout our career during this,” said Erick Roberts, food service officer of Admiral Nimitz Hall Galley. “Watching the staff do what they're trained to do is pretty eye-opening and it's just a very surreal experience seeing what they are capable of.”
