    Greer Chapel Gets an Upgrade

CAMP SHELBY JOINT FORCES TRAINING CENTER, Miss. - Sitting on a hill near Camp Shelby's parade field lies a small church which most Soldiers training here recognize as Greer Chapel. For 16 years, the Chapel has served as a spiritual haven for thousands of troops. Greer Chapel has recently been renovated to stay up-to-date with today's modern military.

Among the most technical of the renovations were the addition of audio and video upgrades.

Chief Warrant Officer 4 Ricky McWilliams, telecom manager of the Mississippi National Guard's Directorate of Information Management, explained that the chapel now has four 50-inch television monitors mounted throughout the sanctuary.

The monitors have motorized mounts that can be controlled by remote, which creates less distraction when not in use. The chapel also houses new speakers and microphones that are managed by the Behringer wireless mixer system.

“No one is bound to a sound room or anything like that anymore,” McWilliams said. “Everything is now hidden in the back so you don’t have to touch it.”

Greer Chapel first got a statement for improvement when the Assistant Adjutant General Brig. Gen. Amos P. Parker, Jr. visited the chapel and noticed that the building was outdated, McWilliams said. Renovations began in January 2020 and took nearly two months.

Along with technological advancements, the chapel was repainted and the roof was restored.

These new upgrades not only integrate the classic look of Greer Chapel with modern equipment, but also help Camp Shelby Chaplain Lt. Col. Antoine Barlow bring troops together to worship under one building.

"The Army's time-honored tradition of supporting religious practice has never waned," Barlow said. "This explains why a modernized army should both fight and worship with the most modern equipment available."

Soldiers training on Camp Shelby can visit during every Inactive Duty Training Sunday from 0800 to 0830 to experience the new technological improvements Greer Chapel has to offer.
