JOINT BASE BALAD, Iraq — The 23rd Ordnance Company, from Grafenwoehr, Germany, has been in Iraq since Nov. 2008. The company runs the Corps Storage Area here which supplies ammunition to all major Ammunition Supply Points within Iraq as well as Afghanistan. They also have a detachment of 13 Soldiers to run the Ammunition Transfer and Holding Point at Al Asad Air Base, Iraq.
Over the past eight months, they have seen an increase in the amount of retrograde shipments to Kuwait and have supported several air missions to Afghanistan. To assist the surge of coalition forces in Afghanistan, the CSA has provided ammunition to support the warfighter as they increase their operations. Throughout all phases of operations, the 23rd Ord. continues to provide non-stop support and has issued more than 7,300 short tons of ammunition to units throughout Iraq.
In addition to providing Class V, or ammunition support, to units in two theaters, the 23rd Ord. Co. has placed a great emphasis on improving the CSA. The Residue Yard and the Turn-In Section have been reorganized to better handle an increased mission of retrograde as more units turn in their excess ammunition. They also worked to consolidate ammunition within the CSA which reduced the amount of containers required for storage. These improvements will greatly assist their replacing unit's mission during the expected draw down of forces in Iraq and set them up for success in the future.
